Gastric banding, also known as Lap Band Surgery, is a type of weight loss surgery where the size of your stomach is reduced using an inflatable silicone device that is placed around the top portion of the stomach, usually via laparoscopic surgery, so that you can only eat small meals.

What is involved in Gastric Banding Surgery?
Gastric banding is a relatively safe operation whereby the surgeon will place an adjustable band around the top of the stomach to create a small pouch to hold food in which food becomes trapped when it is ingested. The benefit of this is there is a smaller capacity for solid food to be held and a person will feel full more quickly. Food in the pouch is digested more slowly and so a person's sense of "fullness" can last longer after meals.
