Breast Reduction

One of the most important ways to prepare yourself is to know what is involved in your procedure. In order for you to have a better understanding of the Breast Reduction procedure, please find a virtual 3D animation of your procedure, with full explanations or the process, in our 3-D Library: Breast Reduction.

Breast Reduction
A mammoplasty for reduction, commonly known as a Breast Reduction, is a plastic surgery technique that can reduce, lift and reshape the breasts for cosmetic appearance or to alleviate associated pain and discomfort. It can also reduce the size of the areola (the dark skin surrounding the nipple).

What is involved in a Breast Reduction?
Cosmetic surgeons who specialize in breast reduction procedures do so by surgically removing excess glandular tissue, fat and skin and moving the nipple and areola into their new position. Several different techniques can be used during breast reduction surgery depending on the size and curvature of the breast.

Who is suitable for a Breast Reduction?
Women who have experienced medical problems and physical discomforts caused by unusually large breasts, including back and neck pain, rashes or breathing problems
Women who are otherwise healthy and who wish to enhance their self image
Women usually older than eighteen

Risk factors and considerations
It is important that you consult with your surgeon before any procedure is undertaken. Know in advance any risks associated with your procedure and take the time with your doctor to assess your condition and treatment needs before you consent to any surgery. Be sure to have your medical and personal health records with you during your consultation and be prepared to ask questions.

While every patient is different and every procedure unique there are some risks associated with a breast reduction that you should be aware of and discuss with your surgeon:

  • Noticeable scarring
  • Unevenly aligned nipples
  • Numbness around the nipples and areolas
  • Infection or other risks associated with any surgery
  • A woman who intends to breast feed should consult first with her doctor

Length of the surgery:

  • typically from three to four hours under local or general sedation.

Length of the hospital stay:

  • One night

Length of the recovery period and post operative care:

  • Temporary pain, soreness and bruises around the breasts for two or three days.
  • Follow-up visit to the hospital one week after surgery.
  • Wearing of an elastic bandage or surgical bra for one to four weeks.

Most women can return to work about one week after the surgery although strenuous movements should be avoided for several weeks to ensure proper healing. It may take several months or more for the breast reduction scars to fade.

Remember to consult with your surgeon both before and after your procedure and follow the care as advised by your surgeon and your regular physician.
