One of the most important ways to prepare yourself is to know what is involved in your procedure. In order for you to have a better understanding of the Breast Augmentation procedure, please find a virtual 3D animation of your procedure, with full explanations or the process, in our 3-D Library: Breast Augmentation.

Breast Augmentation
Augmentation mammoplasty, commonly known as breast augmentation or breast implants, is a plastic surgery technique that can enlarge and shape the breasts and increase a woman's bust line by one or more bra cup sizes.

What is involved in Breast Augmentation?
Plastics surgeons who specialize in implant surgery using either saline-filled or gel implants behind each breast. While a common cosmetic procedure, breast implants vary considerably by each individual patient and the exact technique and material will only be decided upon after consultation with a surgeon.

Who is suitable for Breast Augmentation?

  • Women who are otherwise healthy and wish to enhance their self image
  • Women who feel their breast size was never fully developed
  • Women who want to restore breast volume as a result of pregnancy or weight loss

Risk factors and considerations
It is important that you consult with your surgeon before any procedure is undertaken. Know in advance any risks associated with your procedure and take the time with your doctor to assess your condition and treatment needs before you consent to any surgery. Be sure to have your medical and personal health records with you during your consultation and be prepared to ask questions.

While every patient is different and every procedure unique there are some risks associated with a breast implant that you should be aware of and discuss with your surgeon:

  • Build-up of scar tissue around the implant
  • Deflation of the implant
  • Numbness around the nipples or breast skin
  • Infection or other risks associated with any surgery

Length of the surgery:

  • Typically from one to two hours under local or general sedation.
  • Length of the hospital stay: one night.

Length of the recovery period and post operative care:

  • Temporary pain, swelling or soreness for two or three days.
  • Removal of gauge bandages with three days.
  • Removal of stitches about one week after surgery.

Most women can return to work about one week after the surgery although strenuous movements should be avoided for several weeks to ensure proper healing. It may take several months or more for the breast implant scars to fade.

Remember to consult with your surgeon both before and after your procedure and follow the care as advised by your surgeon and your regular physician.

You will have a lot of questions to ask, so preparation is key to make the most of your consultation. We suggest that you:

  • Write your questions down to make sure you remember them
  • Come with your medical history/survey already completed
  • Bring any photos or visuals aids that will help explain what it is you want or expect from treatment.

Plastic or cosmetic surgery has been around for many years, and the results have satisfied millions of people all over the world, but should never taken for granted, so please pay attention to the information above, and consult with your local physician if you are not clear on the procedure, and of course feel free to ask us any questions you might have. We are here to make sure that your medical travel experience is to the highest standards.
